Study of genetic disorders of brain development and function

Jozef Gécz (School of Medicine and Robinson Research Institute, Adelaide University, Adelaide SA 5000, Australia; Member of the Slovak Learned Society)

Prof. Jozef Gécz is dedicated to the systematic study of the genetic causes of brain development disorders. As a group, brain development disorders are extremely common and affect up to 1 in 8 children. These include mental retardation, epilepsy, autism, speech and language disorders as well as cerebral palsy, which was not and is not obvious to many people. Prof. Gécz discovered more than 350 genes and with them new cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for disorders of brain development, maturation or aging. Early genetic testing and precise therapies based on knowledge of genetics and genomics represent a key opportunity for the successful treatment of individuals with disorders of brain development and function.
